Pharmacist Career: A Great Career Prescription

What exactly you do in pharmacist career? When the doctor gives you a prescription you take it to a pharmacy. It is the pharmacist’s position to issue that medicine. Not only does this individual package the medicine for you but they make sure you understand how it works and answer any questions you might have about it. You could be pharmacists in a private owned pharmacy or in a chain of drug stores; some pharmacists open up their own drugstores. This career choice is a great one to get into. Because employment of pharmacists is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations, this is definitely the prescription for a great career. There are a couple different pharmacists careers that you can obtain.

Different positions

One of the many careers in the pharmacy is the technician. Every pharmacy has to have a pharmacist who has a license. A technician will always be supervised by one of these pharmacists. The technician although very valuable to the team does not handle responsibilities that should be handled by a certified pharmacist. A technician would not be offering advice on health related matters or drug information without the immediate attention of a registered pharmacist. Technicians can work in many places. Of course you have the neighborhood pharmacy but there are other places as well. Many medical institutions have pharmacies that require a technician. They can be found in the military and in the government. There are many options.

The Pharmaceutical Scientist

Another one of the pharmacist career is a pharmaceutical scientist. As a pharmaceutical scientist you will perform in the work of discovery and development. Your workday will mainly be in a lab setting where you will continually study the human molecule system and experimenting with new opportunities for medication. You will be working on the drugs of tomorrow that might save many lives or at least just help people feel better.You can also have a pharmacist’s career on the go. This means that you do not work in a specific pharmacy. You will take medications to places like federal facilities, managed care organizations; long-term care facilities, home infusion pharmacies, clinical consulting services, and more.

You can also work for pharmaceutical companies. This means that you will fill prescriptions for medications that are mailed out to customers.It all depends on what kind of a pharmacist career that you are interested in. Some people prefer the drugstore pharmacy, where you see a lot of the same customers all the time, some prefer the behind the scenes kind of pharmaceutical companies. But no matter which that you decide on they all require education but how much?

Pharmacist Career: Educational

Students will have to acquire a Pharm.D degree that has been awarded by a pharmacy educational institution that has appropriate accreditation. At one time you had to achieve the standard four- year degree to obtain the title of a registered pharmacist but times have changed. If you want to get into a Pharm.D program you will have to have studied in a post high school educational facility for not less than two years. Having completed courses in the science field will work in your favor. Biology, chemistry and the sort are typically required. Nearly three quarters of these programs make it mandatory for those who apply to be administered the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT).

Looking at the money part of the pharmacist careers, pharmacists make excellent money. Just 4 years ago the average wage for this position was $94,520. Of course this varies. Those who worked in the retail industry averaged around $92,000 and those who were employed in more institutional operations around $97,000. In general those who worked full time as registered pharmacists brought in around $108,000 annually and that is not too bad. Of course there are those in various aspects of the business that made as low as $57,000 and those in specialized fields that earned closer to $120,000. The point is you can make good money if you want to study to become a pharmacist. The career is growing and lets face it medicine will always have to be dispensed by certified personnel.

So we now know that pharmacists have a choice of where they want to work at and that they are well paid. Yes, it takes a while in school to get your degree but it could be well worth it in the end. All it takes is a positive attitude, a little motivation and the desire to participate in a position that you desire to fill.
